One Caregiver's Orange Moment
One Caregiver's Orange Moment
There is a child who communicates very little with words.
For children with significant trauma, this is common. The very thing they need most, connection, is the thing that feels most threatening. They have learned, through experience, that relationships are not safe. That vulnerability leads to harm. That it is better to shut down than to open up.
One Horse. One Session. One Relationship.
This child started coming to animal sessions at Joy Meadows. Each week, one horse. One session. One gentle, patient relationship with an animal that doesn't judge, doesn't react, doesn't make demands.
"She looks forward to her time with the horse more than anything else she has participated in, probably ever. Her eyes light up when she talks about it. Because she communicates so little with words, it's been amazing to hear her open up and talk about what all she's learned and what she gets to do each week. She talks about her emotions more instead of throwing a fit." — Caregiver
Why Animal Therapy Works for Children in Foster Care
Children who have experienced trauma often struggle to connect with people before they can connect with animals. Animals are non-threatening, consistent, and responsive in ways that feel safe when human relationships don't yet. For children in foster care, that kind of low-stakes connection can be the first step toward trusting people again.
At Joy Meadows, animal sessions are built on exactly that principle. The relationship between a child and a horse creates a space where something new becomes possible: a child who has learned not to trust begins to trust. A child who cannot name her emotions begins to name them. A child who once threw fits begins to talk instead.
Making It Accessible for Every Family
Thanks to the generosity of donors who cover the true cost of these programs, families are able to participate in animal sessions for just $5. Because a family's financial situation should never be the reason a child misses a moment like this one.
At Joy Meadows, we serve foster, adoptive, and kinship families regardless of agency or economic need. Every program, every session, every orange moment reflects that commitment.
Be Part of What Makes This Possible
When you give to Joy Meadows, you help keep programs like this accessible to every family who needs them. You become the reason a child who stopped talking starts talking again. The reason her eyes light up on the drive over. The reason her caregiver gets to witness something they didn't think was possible.
